Sustainable Design vs. LEED

Sustainable design is a collaborative process that involves the holistic use of materials and systems to address the ecological (environmental, social and economic) value of the built environment. It is often referred to as “Green Design” or “Eco-Design.” Sustainable design seeks to minimize the ecological impact of construction.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ( LEED ) was established in the U.S. by the United States Green Building Council as a rating system that provides a set of standards by which sustainable projects are measured. A series of credits are given for different aspects of sustainable design within specific categories. The categories range from site development and waste removal to the building systems and finishes that are used in the project. In addition to the improved built environment of sustainable buildings; for many clients, LEED Certification offers a valuable marketing tool.

Ultimately, these are two separate and distinct aspects of design. Sustainable design is a collaborative method of designing buildings and environments. LEED is a tool to measure that overall sustainability.
